Magic Fluid Control

N. Thuerey, R. Keiser, M. Pauly, U. Ruede

The movie consists of three clips to demonstrate the possibilities of controlled water simulations:
1. A magician pulls out water from a basin which forms a teapot by moving his hand upwards from the basin.
2. Water flows magically upwards a stair where it forms a human figure. This is achieved by using control particles from a reversed water simulation and from an invisible model.
3. The magician moves a duck out of water from one basin to another and vice versa. Finally, he pulls out two ducks from both basins which end up in a short "fight".

Nils Thuerey is a PhD student at the chair for system simulation of the University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He is working on algorithms for free surface fluid simulations.
Richard Keiser is a research associate and PhD student at the computer science department of ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He specializes in physics based animations using particles and deformable point-based surface modeling.
Mark Pauly is professor at the computer science department of ETH Zurich and focuses on efficient representations and algorithms for dynamic 3D shapes.
Ulrich Ruede is head of the system simulation chair of the University Erlangen-Nuremberg. He deals with the modelling, efficient simulation and optimization of complex systems in science and engineering.

The animation has been created in the context of the authors' work on controlled fluid simulation. The water is simulated using the Lattice-boltzman method. It is controlled using particles which define local force fields and are generated automatically from either a physical simulation or a sequence of target shapes. At the same time, as much as possible of the natural fluid motion is preserved. The framework has been integrated into the open source software Blender, which was used to animate and render the shown sequences.
