Numerical Simulation of Semiconductor Lasers by Finite Elements
Description
The difficulty in numerical simulation of DFB lasers is
attributed to two important things. On the one hand,
reflexion properties of the structure have to be considered
properly. On the other hand, those lasers offer a large
resonator geometry compared to the wavelength. Therefore,
a standard finite element method cannot be used. For
this reason a finite element method was developed which
can be applied especially to lasers with long geometries
and inner reflexions. In fact the nodal basis functions are
multiplied with suitable sinus and cosinus functions, so
that one achieves higher accuracy even though less grid
points are needed. By this simulation laser typical effects
such as spatial hole burning and frequency chirping can be
demonstrated.
